A team of ten students from GBS’s HR School of Excellence, guided by Dr. (Prof) Debaprasad Chattopadhyay, Senior Professor and HOD-HR, went on an educational tour on 29th February, 2016 to Jamshedpur. The tour itinerary included a visit to TSPDL (Tata Steel Processing Development Limited), Tisco (Tata Steel) and the XLRI campus.
On the morning of 29th, the GBS team led by Prof Chattopadyhay left Kolkata for Jamshedpur and on arrival visited the TSPDL Bara Plant and Corporate Office in Jamshedpur where they met senior personnel from that organisation including Mr. Shekhar Kumar Jha, Divisional Manager, HR & IR, Mr. K. Krishna Kumar, Manager HR & IR, Mr. Adhiraj Sen, Deputy Manager Administration, Mr. Nishant Kumar Mishra, Deputy Manager, HR & IR and Mr. K. Rajesh, Shift-in-Charge, Plant Operations. The GBS team’s interactions with TSPDL centred around company operations and HR-IR practices. A lunch was hosted by TSPDL for team GBS followed by a corporate film show with a message from the Managing Director and Sr. GM-HR. The GBS visitors were then taken around the plant and the Safety Culture practiced at TSPDL was explained in great detail. A Question-Answer Session wrapped up the visit to TSPDL.
On 1st March, 2016, the GBS team visited the Tata Steel Management Development Centre (Jamshedpur) where they were exposed to the HR-IR norms being currently followed in the organisation. A Question-Answer session with Dr. Sushmita Srivastava, Head of HR brought to the fore the company’s present focus on Mentoring. Following the visit to Tata Steel, the team from GBS went on a campus tour of XLRI, the premier business school. The students checked out the facilities available for students/faculty on the campus, interacted with administrative officers and students before having lunch at the XLRI Dhaba.
The students, along with Prof. Chattopadhyay, returned to Kolkata on 2nd March. There were many positive takeaways for the students of GBS who went on the trip – personal interactions with seasoned HR professionals, practical exposure to real HR issues in an organisation, experience of witnessing the operations in two TATA organisations, the fun of networking with fellow students at XLRI and the joy of going on an educational tour with friends. The GBS students captured many of these moments on camera and have made wonderful memories of the rest.
