Business Resilience in the post COVID-19 World

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a ‘black swan’ event that has impacted nearly every facet of human life with major socio-economic impact. The world is undeniably facing a new, challenging and an unpredictable event with the outbreak of the pandemic. But with significant disruption comes great opportunities. The tireless researches in different domains are already at full swing for a better and more sustainable future. The need for an hour is to restore the economy and be resilient in a sustainable, but focused direction.

The pandemic has made every human self-sufficient and confident to fight the odds with new vigour and intelligence defining a new way of living in the ‘new normal’ of things. It has exposed the fragility innate in many of our current practices and constructs. But with significant disruption comes great opportunities. Economic recovery packages may be designed to “build back better”. This process means doing more than getting economies and livelihoods quickly back on their feet. Recovery policies also need to trigger investment and behavioural changes that will reduce the likelihood of future shocks and increase society’s resilience to them when they do occur. Central to this approach is a focus on well-being and inclusiveness.

While the World continues to reel under the impact of the crisis, this pandemic has stimulated lateral thinking and has compelled companies to rewrite their pathways for success. As businesses gear up to ease themselves into the post COVID-19 World, they are likely to face increased scrutiny from the stakeholders looking at the newer possibilities for optimizing the business operations.

The theme for ‘International Research Seminar 2020’ was ‘Business Resilience in the post COVID-19 World: Role of Integrated Management’, conceptualized to create an inclusive platform with corporate veterans, academicians, entrepreneurs and students, who deliberated and provided research-oriented findings in terms of the role of integrated management system for business sustainability in the post COVID-19 world. An Integrated Management System (IMS) integrates all the systems and procedures of an organization into one full structure, allowing an organization to function as a single unit with consolidated goals. Post COVID era would require such an integrated approach to become agile in their businesses.

This International Seminar focused on the implications of the pandemic on different segments of economy and importance of strategic resilience and integrated management for business sustainability.

Spread over multiple days, the Seminar was divided into four sessions of distinctive themes.

(a) Panel Discussion 1: “New Normal” Consumers and Business Resilience in an Era of Pandemic

The pandemic has created a transformation in the lives of human being. It has changed the orientation of businesses and persuaded consumers to lead a new way of life. The “New Normal” consumers are different in their decision making processes from the pre-pandemic era, and hence it has an impact on different businesses including media and education. Entrepreneurship and employability in the era of pandemic has compelled businesses to become resilient to survive and sustain in this period of the “New Normal”. The panel deliberated on different businesses and marketing strategies and discussed how “New Normal” consumers would adapt and respond to different businesses.

(b) Panel Discussion 2: Economic, Social, Cultural and Technological Resilience to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals

This Agenda represented a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It promoted development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encouraged the formalization and growth of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services, developed quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional and trans-border infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all. It presented the opportunities offered by rapid technological change regarding the achievement and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals across the various economic, social and environmental dimensions. Cultural aspects have played a pivotal role for the 2030 Agenda to be successful. Cultural rights, heritage, diversity and creativity are core components of human and sustainable development.

(c) Panel Discussion 3: Are we ready for the Market Resilience in near Future?

The sudden outbreak of COVID-19 virus poses a troubling health crisis that the world is dealing with. In addition to the human effects, there is also a major economic impact felt globally. As viruses do not know boundaries, the impacts will continue to spread. In fact, 94 percent of the Fortune 1000 already encountered COVID-19 disruptions. Actions to handle the pandemic cycle and the economic downturn are emerging areas of focus for most companies over the next few months, whilst taking various risk management actions and a near-term future. When we stepped into the recovery process of the crisis, resilient leaders identified and reinforced important changes from “today” to “tomorrow” thought for their teams. They saw how significant COVID-19-related market and social changes created major uncertainties that need to be addressed and seized as an opportunity for growth and change.

(d) Panel Discussion 4: Redesigning Business Organizations for Resilience

Resilience is related to organization’s responses to disruptive events, by positively adapting to a new level of complexity in order to overcome the situation and implement changes successfully. A few of them were able to adapt the incremental changes and sudden disruptions occurred due to COVID-19 impact for their survival and growth. The focus of this panel discussion was to explore possible strategies for the continuity of business operations in periods of uncertainty and risk for a more holistic view of business health and success.
