Khalid Shamim

I am based in Dubai working as Director for Wondrous Wealth, UAE but my journey has been a roller coaster ride far from a smooth sail. After finishing university I wasn’t sure about my career path when a surprise phone call from an old friend got me introduced to Globsyn Business School and I decided to pursue PGDM. Academics was always the focus however extracurricular activities always interested me. I wanted to be on stage but was scared of public speaking, all that changed during our first Serendipity where I landed an accidental role as a lead of a drama portraying an American Businessman, this one act of courage to face my demons transformed my personae and I became more of an extrovert that helped me a lot in my later life. I graduated from Globsyn in 2004 and got a campus placement to Iffco-Tokio General Insurance and from there I moved onto Standard Chartered Bank working as a Relationship Manager. Then in the winter of 2007 I decided to move to Dubai to join ABN AMRO which was later acquired by Royal Bank of Scotland, I obtained my certification from CISI, UK and I worked there for about 2 years.

Completing the PGDM program from Globsyn Business School gave me the confi dence to lead in a way that I never could have done before. Doing my post-graduation from GBS was one of the most gratifying decisions of my life. Being part of a diverse cohort made me realize that the sky is the limit. Not just from the textbooks and lectures, but from the guest speakers, workshops, mentorships, networking, and definitely BDG’s sessions. My presentation and public speaking skills dramatically improved along with project management and leadership. Having spent the last 2 decades working in accounts management, business development, market making, and international business, I can clearly cite GBS to be the strong foundation behind my successful professional career. Before doing my Post Graduation from Globsyn, I had the privilege of having the experience of working in an MNC set-up (Tech Pacific India Ltd., erstwhile Godrej Pacific India), but one basic thing which I found missing in me during those formative years was the ‘Structure’ – the way of understanding an issue and jotting down the way forward.

Globsyn as a respectable Corporate Brand was pretty well known. So when the initial Advertisement regarding the starting of the Management faculty came, I opted for it and feel that doing MBA from GBS has instilled the faith in my abilities. The grooming which we got from Mr. Bikram Dasgupta in his ‘Learn and Intern sessions’ were LIFE lessons… It has made the person we are today.

Coming to placements, I was selected by Ma Foi Management Consultants Ltd, a market leader in HR Consulting and Recruitments, wherein I looked after East for the Recruitments and Outsourcing business development. The exposure of working there had been phenomenal. The next move was to Bennett Coleman (Times Business Solutions Ltd.) where I was entrusted as the Profit Center Head for their Recruitment wing. Then the entrepreneurial bug which had been subdued for last few years hit me, and I ventured on my own into HR Services starting my firm Encore HR Services India. Sudip Patra

Pursuing Ph.D. and Teaching faculty at Glasgow University – Batch – 5

I have done my Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Glasgow, one of the top 50 universities of the world having a long legacy of Adam Smith, Lord Kelvin, Carlyle and others, and it’s also among the Russel group in UK. It has been a great journey for me till now from Globsyn days to here. I have always considered that my base in finance and economics had developed at Globsyn and has been very critical for me in later endevours.

I joined Globsyn Business School to pursue my MBA after my graduation. My days in Globsyn were good academically and I learned a lot during this period. The sessions of Mr. Bikram Dasgupta were good for self-realization.

I got an offer from ICICI Prulife and it was good learning there. Then I joined Emami Ltd. as EA to CEO & MD which was the turning point in my career. It gave me the required ground to make a big jump in my career. I was instrumental in making big decisions in the organization like mergers, product launches, cost rationalization, and bigger project updates. It helped me to make a bigger shift to Sahaj e Village Ltd. (an associate company of SREI Infrastructure Finance Ltd.) as AVP – Planning & Strategic Initiatives. I am a firm believer of ‘achiever’s achieve’. During difficult times, I learned from my mistakes and worked on my mistakes. The important recipes for success are hard work, patience as an approach, quick thinking, and good communication with a pinch of luck. Globsyn has been a finishing school for many of us as it has been for me.

Those were the days when I had just passed out of college, I was dazed and confused. This was when I stepped into Globsyn Business School. I graduated with a B.Com (Hons) and also completed my M.Com in Accounts & Finance from Calcutta University in the year 2007. In the same year, I joined Globsyn Business School for my MBA. I specialized in Finance as my major and Marketing as my minor subject. Though it was my second masters but value addition which I had in GBS in terms of learning, skills development, communication skills, holistic personality development, etc., was tremendous. I started looking at my subjects especially finance with new dimensions and thought processes resulting in thinking beyond conventional theories and practices. Finally, I got placed in Bank of Baroda as an Assistant Manager from the campus.

Whatever I am today, professionally, I owe it to my alma mater, Globsyn Business School. Coming from a doctor’s family, I was a naïve soul in the professional world. BDG Sir and the esteemed faculty team groomed me for the exciting world of consumers, introduced me to the complex yet endearing world of marketing, and taught me the nuances of brand building. When I joined, GBS was in its nascent stage, therefore we had the opportunity to explore, experiment, and pave the way to create our own success stories, and we did just that. I pursued my PGDM course majoring in Human Resources from Globsyn Business School during 2005-07. Since we had a dual specialization I had opted for marketing as the minor. GBS helped me to improve my communication skills, teamwork (managing different individuals), leadership skills (taking charge in certain projects), and sense of adaptability (need of the hour) through group projects and extracurricular activities. Hosting Serendipity in 2007 was also a memorable experience since I could showcase my talent and inclination towards music.

I am grateful to Mr. Bikram Dasgupta for shaping me fit to be employed and be competitive in the corporate world. His ‘Learn and Intern’ classes have helped me immensely on my professional front. GBS provided a well-rounded education, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. One of our faculty told us once when we have just completed our 1st year, “Specialize in something that you would enjoy doing for the next 30 years of your career.” This is one piece of advice that has kept motivating me in my 16+ years of corporate life.

In 2006, I got an opportunity to do my internship with IOCL, Haldia, and then once again with an IT company called Labvantage (A Purnendu Chatterjee Group of Companies) in the HR domain. Interacting with different people and getting my work done gave me a lot of insights, which later helped me in my initial days when I joined the Kotak Group. I would Like to thank Globsyn from the bottom of my heart since this is where we all learnt that “Ordinary men can do extraordinary things.
