Universal Human Values consists of several elements, of which Peace is extremely important. This assumes greater significance, particularly when we look around the global canvas to dismally witness wars, hatred, greed, power clashes and many unpleasant events. Harmony is at its peril, and positive values like forgiveness, resilience, love, tolerance, justice, respect, responsibility, and truth are in utter jeopardy. The human mind becomes vitiated, imbalanced, thereby thwarting composure, and group interactions lacking fairness, in the process, often giving rise to violence. The need of the hour to address this severe menace is to inculcate inner peace and exhibit outer peace through effective management of emotions and ensuring proper self-awareness, so as to lead to amicable relations and constructive actions across the world.
The fulcrum on which universal human values should rest is inner peace or peace of mind, as it propels positive thoughts, self-awareness and mindfulness, calmness and balance with mental equilibrium. Positive thoughts generate good feelings, which are pure in nature and are based on rectitude arising from the heart instead of diluting consciousness. Self-awareness and mindfulness prevent derogatory and destructive reactions, which are converted into calm and positive energy. Paying proper attention to emotions and thoughts precipitates mindfulness and triggers self-awareness. Life, per se, is fraught with multiple challenges, and inner contentment and composure result in balance and calmness, thus maintaining mental well-being and equilibrium.
Outer Peace is the precursor to global and social harmony. This leads to harmony with others, characterised by peaceful co-existence, showing respect to diverse individuals and groups through constructive dialogue, acceptance and tolerance. Prioritisation should be accorded to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which will result in fairness, justice and combat conflicts and circumvent bickerings, belligerence and detrimental confrontation. Right conduct and responsibility will enable the fulfilment of individual duties, with integrity at its core, making choices which are responsible and fostering social and global peace. Annihilation and physical harm can be avoided through non-violence, which will address direct and indirect undesired aggression and will maintain global peace.
Having mentioned above, what is important is to link Inner Peace with Outer Peace. The individual concept of peace has to transcend to world peace, and a perpetual cycle of positive action has to happen across societies with compassion, trust, cooperation and understanding, which will eventually usher in peaceful societies globally. At Globsyn Business School, we have been trying to do all these precisely, inner peace through our Universal Human Values Centre where meditation, dhyaan are held, running electives like Universal Human Values as a part of curriculum, Spirituality Club activities, touring various locations which bear rich legacy of integrity and periodically inviting leading speakers on the subject who are recognised torch-bearers of universal human values and followers of transformation and secular harmony.
